China imported 173 tons of gold in June, the largest monthly import since March 2024, marking its third consecutive monthly increase.
China’s gold imports during the first half of 2026 reached about 820 tons, doubling compared to the same period, and recording the second highest total for first-half imports ever, just about 10 tons shy of the record of about 830 tons recorded in the first half of 2025.
This increase was driven by investors buying gold as prices fell, along with banks increasing their imports to rebuild stockpiles amid strong demand from individual investors.
Meanwhile, gold-backed exchange-traded funds in China have attracted inflows of 28 tons since the start of the year, an indication of continued strong demand for the precious metal in the country.
