US media outlets reported that senators reached an agreement that would end the government shutdown.
Reports indicate that senators reached a temporary agreement to fund the government through January, after disagreements over healthcare funding, food subsidies, and President Donald Trump's decisions to fire federal employees.
As news of the breakthrough broke, Trump told reporters upon arriving at the White House after spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, It looks like we're getting closer to the end of the lockdown.
According to news agencies in Washington, the Republicans need 8 Democratic votes to pass the bill.
Democrats have rejected 14 previous partial funding bills proposed by Republicans.
Senate Democrats have so far resisted efforts to pass a funding measure aimed at pressuring Republicans to agree to health care reforms that would include extending expired subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.
The Senate is scheduled to vote procedurally on the bill Sunday evening.
After its approval in the Senate, it will need to be ratified by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives before being sent to Trump's desk for his signature.
According to lawmakers, the bill refunds the SNAP food assistance program, which supports more than 42 million low-income Americans.
This agreement also reverses Trump’s decisions last month to fire thousands of federal employees, and ensures a vote to extend health care subsidies that are set to expire by the end of this year.
Trump attacks Democrats
President Trump confirmed that the United States is officially experiencing the longest government shutdown in the country's history, and blamed the Democrats for it.
During a meeting with Republican senators at the White House, Trump stated that the government shutdown is now officially the longest government shutdown in American history.
He added: The Democrats are acting suicidally and destroying our country... I don't think they get the blame they deserve.
He warned that the government shutdown was affecting several sectors, such as the stock market and airlines, stressing that we must stop the government shutdown by all means.
