Stocks in Japan closed lower at the end of trading on Monday, with indices falling and losses recorded in the paper and pulp, transportation and communications sectors.
At the close of trading in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was down 0.22%.
Among the top performers on the Nikkei 225 today were Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd (TYO:4506), which surged 20.24% or 500.00 points to close at 2,970.50. Nitori Holdings Co Ltd (TYO:9843) also saw significant gains, rising 9.42% or 288.00 points to finish at 3,346.00, while Credit Saison Co., Ltd. (TYO:8253) climbed 7.37% or 328.00 points to close at 4,777.00.
As for the worst performers at the close of trading, Olympus Corp. (TYO:7733) shares closed down 12.87%, or 238.50 points, at 1,614.00. Resona Holdings, Inc. (TYO:8308) shares fell 8.01%, or 171.50 points, to 1,970.50, while Nikon Corp. (TYO:7731) shares closed down 6.75%, or 133.00 points, at 1,836.50.
The number of top-performing stocks exceeded the number of stocks that closed lower in trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with 2,028 compared to 1,610, while 190 remained unchanged.

(TYO:7733) shares fell to a record low, declining 12.87% or 238.50 points to 1,614.00. Credit Saison Co., Ltd. (TYO:8253) shares climbed to a record high, rising 7.37% or 328.00 points to 4,777.00.
The Nikkei Volatility Index, which measures the implied standard volatility of options on the Nikkei 225 index, traded 0.32% higher and closed at 34.21.
WTI crude oil futures for April delivery fell 0.02%, or $0.01, to settle at $62.74 a barrel. In other commodities trading, Brent crude oil futures for April delivery slipped 0.04%, or $0.03, to $67.72 a barrel, while April gold futures declined 0.68%, or $34.16, to close at $5,012.14 an ounce.
The USD/JPY pair added 0.29% and traded at 153.15, while the EUR/JPY pair continued its rise by about 0.26% and reached 181.72.
Dollar index futures traded up 0.03% at 96.85.
